Hyde Park

A Charter was filed in the court of Westmoreland County on May 27, 1925, by a group of citizens who associated themselves for the purpose of organizing the Hyde Park Fire Company. The men who signed the charter were: F. W. Bycroft, G. E. Clifton, R. L. Eakins, F. E. Haines, Gomer Johns, and M. H. McNeil. R. L. Eakins, Gomer Johns, and M. H. McNeil were appointed as the first trustees of the firemen. The need to provide fire protection for the community was finally fulfilled.

The company's first purchase was a two-wheel hand drawn hose cart. The first fire truck was a 1910 Ford model that was 20 years old when the Hyde Park firemen purchased it. At this time, William Franklin was the fire chief. The second truck that the fire company owned was a converted 1929 Lincoln limousine that was a touring car. It was donated to the fire department by Thomas McCausland of the Hyde Park Foundry and Machine Co. The third truck was a 1950 international fire engine. At the time, Joseph Zanotto was the president of the firemen and Harry Kenney was Fire Chief. Willaim Stevenson was the next Fire Chief. William Stevenson was the next Fire Chief serving until 1962 when he moved from the area.

Albert Nigra was elected as the Fire Chief and was responsible for starting a renaissance in the fire company. In 1964, he headed the committee that drew up the specifications for the Ford fire truck that would now be purchased. To facilitate the new fire equipment, the fire hall needed to be renovated. Robert Key, Sr. did the building, with the work force being supplied by local men from the Hyde Park Foundry and Machine Company. Al Nigra served as fire chief until his resignation in 1979. Men who have served the company as chiefs since are: Louis Corna, Terry McComb, Kevin Huska, John Corna, Marc Corna, Jim Safranyos, Dave Safranyos, Roger McKelvey, Jason Gagen, and currently John Corna is serving as chief again.

Due to the escalating cost of fire equipment in 1988 the men decided to have the '64 Ford truck stripped and rebuilt so that it would meet the new guidelines imposed by the State. In 2004 the company purchased a 1995 Peirce Saber and the truck is still currently in service. The current station is the origanal station that has housed the company sice 1925. This makes it one of the older stations in the Alle Kiski area.
